GARDian Program FAQs

About the GARDian Program
What is the GARDian program?

The GARDian program is a comprehensive no-cost resource to help educate all people living with primary immunodeficiency (PI) and their families about the condition and how to live well with it regardless of treatment.

Why should I enroll in the GARDian program? What support will I receive?

For Patients: The GARDian program’s comprehensive assistance includes insurance support, educational resources, and connection to a GARDian Program Patient Partner and Nurse Partner, who can answer questions and provide personal support.

For Healthcare Providers: The GARDian program provides assistance with insurance and benefit-related questions. The program also helps your patients by providing supplemental educational resources and personal support.

What kind of connection does the GARDian program offer?

When you enroll in the GARDian program, you will have the opportunity to speak with a GARDian Program Patient Partner or a Nurse Partner. A Patient Partner is a caregiver or person living with primary immunodeficiency who can provide you with personal support and tips for coping with day-to-day life. A Nurse Partner is an experienced healthcare professional who can answer your IgG administration questions.

What types of insurance support does the GARDian program offer?

The GARDian program offers a variety of insurance support services for patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals who rely on GAMMAGARD, including:

  • Billing assistance
If a healthcare provider or patient is having a claim denied by an insurer, a GARDian Program Specialist can reach out to the insurer to determine why.
  • Benefit verification
A GARDian Program Specialist can contact the insurer and translate the requirements of the patient’s coverage to the healthcare provider or patient.
  • Prior authorization assistance
Insurance companies sometimes require certain conditions to be met by a patient before they will cover their therapy. This usually entails paperwork. A GARDian Program Specialist can provide necessary forms for prior authorization to help expedite the process.
  • Appeal assistance
In rare instances, a prior authorization claim may be denied by the insurer. A GARDian Program Specialist can contact the insurer to determine their appeal process (if such a process exists) and obtain necessary information or paperwork for the patient or healthcare provider.

In addition, the GARDian program offers insurance lapse coverage (for those who qualify)* to anyone on IgG therapy – regardless of which therapy they use.

To help you navigate today’s complex insurance landscape, the GARDian program offers Insurance 101, a guide for people living with primary immunodeficiency.

*Financial and residency requirements apply. Please contact the GARDian program for additional details.

What is insurance lapse coverage? How do you qualify?

Insurance lapse coverage provides GAMMAGARD at no cost to qualified people who experience a gap in private insurance. It’s available to anyone on IgG treatment who is enrolled in the program – including people who are newly diagnosed and those not currently using GAMMAGARD – if they meet the following qualifications:

  1. Documented loss of insurance coverage
  2. Proof of US citizenship/legal residency
  3. Proof of income (financial eligibility)
  4. Certificates are not needed

Application for assistance and supplemental documentation are not required to be a GARDian program member. Documentation to verify eligibility for assistance is only required when assistance is requested. If a patient is not enrolled in the GARDian program but needs assistance, he or she can enroll at that time.

What if I have no insurance coverage?

If you have no insurance coverage or lose your coverage, enrolling in the GARDian program will provide you with access to our assistance program upon satisfaction of eligibility criteria. The assistance program can help you obtain GAMMAGARD as soon as possible. Contact a GARDian Program Specialist at 1-800-582-7990 for more information.

Can the GARDian program provide co-pay assistance?

The GARDian program does not provide co-pay assistance at this time. If appropriate, the GARDian program can direct patients to support groups, including the Immune Deficiency Foundation, a nonprofit organization for patients with primary immunodeficiency disease, or Patient Services, Inc, a nonprofit organization committed to providing a variety of services to patients living with specific chronic illnesses.

What should I do if my insurance company decides not to continue covering my IgG therapy?

The GARDian program can assist you with insurance-related issues involving IgG treatment.

What Educational Resources and Support are available? How do I access them?

GAMMAGARD LIQUID is used to treat patients with primary immunodeficiency diseases (PI). There are many forms of PI. The most common types of PI result in an inability to make a very important type of protein called antibodies, which help the body fight off infections from bacteria or viruses. GAMMAGARD LIQUID is made from human plasma that is donated by healthy people. GAMMAGARD LIQUID contains antibodies collected from these healthy people that replace the missing antibodies in PI patients.
